First records from Belgium

LN+YY in Belgium

Date: 12/05/2017
Joachim Bertrands saw LN+YY on 7 May 2017 with 25 other Greenshanks in a nature reserve near the marina at Nieuwpoort, at the mouth of the River Yser, west of Ostend. Soon afterwards we had another report from Hans Matheve who had seen the same bird seen in the same place the following day.

The bird was ringed as a juvenile on 8 September 2013 on Thorney Deeps. It was seen feeding in the Thorney Channel off Thornham Point on 14 September, but after that we heard nothing.

The record creates two exciting ‘firsts’. It is the first Thorney bird to be recorded from Belgium. Joachim said that it is, as far as he can see, the first colour-ringed Greenshank to be entered on he Belgian national observation website.
